THE WINDOW

May's window installation was Austin Julian!!!!

"In my visual work I have always been striving to physically convey a kind of Kinetic unstable energy that I feel exists within the technological environment that society is in. I try and bring about these abstractions that result from this energy through visual, sonic and moving medium. I try and bring this mode of working to all aspects of a piece, from the actual detritus of the material I use, to the treatment of structure, gesture, and form. This feeling instability is important for my process because through it two different situations come about. On one hand, I try to create large, jagged, overpowering gestures, be it in sculptural or time based medium. On the other hand, these same structures are falling apart in the same gesture. I am attracted to the aesthetic that is created by this dichotomy between rhythm, structure and total collapse, and strive to keep the viewer in a limbo between those two feelings.

In my pieces, I use this method of conveyance as an outline, or frame, to hold the thematic content of my pieces. I draw from concepts in science fiction, time travel and physics theory, history, conspiracy, and new media language as influences to create themes to place within this framework. These kinds of influences have always shaped my view of the world and evoked the feelings of anguish, frustration, conflict, and human error in me that I try to bring out in the art I make. I want an audience to be able to find these feelings that exist in all our day-to-day lives through my work, and confront the ugly instability that is our condition as humans. I feel that it is important as an artist to acknowledge and react to the realities that exist in their contemporary situation. I want to do this through the dirt and noise that covers all other ideas.

In this piece, "Quantum Bog Mummy Relief Map,” I am trying to execute this instability through the physical warping of the cross section of a bog mummy. this piece is representative as a bog mummy cut and stretched through fractures in it’s space. I treated the materials to represent these fractures, being organic and mechanical and jagged at the same time. my main goal with this was to emote an existential feeling of particle alienation, abstraction, and kinetic flow."

More of Austin here!

Thea Ulrich

Thea Ulrich is psyched to have just moved into the Dirt Palace! She is a sculptor, painter, multi-media installation/performance/video artist who spends her days trying to figure out what exactly that means, while also starting and running an online store called U.R. Unlimited. Check out her art, videos, and U.R. Unlimited respectively, at:

XANDER MARRO

The Foot Apple Parade is an annual event that I learned of from the legendary San Francisco co(n)median team Coil and Sharpe.  The "Foot Apple", as their would suggest, is a variety of apple that grows with legs dangling beneath their cores. The apples for some reason can not ripen in the same location where they grow, so they march in great herds to get to the place where the sun will coax them into their rightful maturity.  Along the way they stop at a bar, which is actually a worm saloon run by snakes, or possibly worms dressed up like snakes. It’s difficult to say.   And suddenly we are in the Garden of Eden, except for that the sin is not original, but rather cheep imitation, and the trunk of the tree of knowledge is not bark covered and made of wood, but actually fleshy legs leading up to a blemished ass and made of paper mache and time has been made to run in all kinds of cockamamie directions.

Come see the Foot Apples! Thursday June 20th 5-8 Craftland Gallery 235 Westminster St

JR URETSKY

J.R. has been busy drinking coffee and shooting videos for an upcoming performance in July.

When she is not crying dusty piles of what once were tears into her coffee and then lapping them up again for nourishment she is installing sculptures and shooting videos in curators bathtubs! Take that impenetrable art market!

More on what J.R.'s working on here!

Seriously, it is almost ready. Pictured below is a sneak peak of one prototype that is hopefully being made into a mold in this very instant.

<3 CALL FOR ROOMMATE(S) <3

To all the people at a crossroads seeking a change of space this coming summer!

Do you want to live in a rare place where everyone around you is incredibly supportive and will say nice things to you all the time? The kind of dreamy place where people from the harsh outside are baffled/creeped out by the good vibes radiating from within this brick/crystal fortress?

The Dirt Palace includes facilities for silkscreen, animation, woodshop, bandroom, grand ballroom, library, and office space. Also, you can stare out the window into chaotic Olneyville Square while eating breakfast and get lost in the melodies of 3 jock prairie dogs working out on their noisey wheel. Let me tell you it really boosts your motivation to work on stuff seeing these little guys do what they do best.

We have one lovely, perverted cat resident but no more please!

If this has piqued your interest maybe you should apply to reside at the Dirt Palace? There are actually several openings coming up. One is a full time residence beginning June 1st, however available as early as May 1st. There are also a few sublet opportunities available.

Email us @ dirt palace (at) yahoo (dot) com so we can get in touch with you in order to set up an interview!

NOTE: "Niceness" results may vary! Discretion is advised! ^_^

XANDER MARRO

Xander is still freewheeling and freelancing and loving it except for those times when she sets herself up for days of stress and nights of well, stress.  For said occasional bouts of angst she has fabricated the following garment to publically display the loathing she feels towards her cruel boss.  In the case that you or someone you love might occasionally need one you can order HERE

In other news, after a period of silence, Xander is on a veritable talking tour.  She was on a panel at Monserrat College in Beverly last week, heads to Bard tomorrow, and next week; back in Providence and is going to keep flexing her power point muscles and give a short talk about posters as an introduction to a feature documentary about “gig posters” called “Just Like Being There”.  It’s presented by the RI AIGA and is TODAY, April 9th, at 6pm at 95 Empire/AS220 Black Box. Here is the face book invite.
She’s not exactly sure of what she’s going to say, but has a premonition that it will be filled with nostalgia for the days of Kinkos on Angel street at 3 am.

Her new line of screen printed hand puppets are still for sale with the good people at Cinders.

JR URETSKY

J.R. Uretsky by Jeremy Otters

Oh um hey everybody, you don't know me but I would very much like to know you. My name is Jeremy Otters and I'm a middle school biology teacher. I'm also best friends with J.R. Uretsky and think that she's super great and feel super honored to be the guest writer for her section of the digest because she's super busy and said I could write whatever I wanted.

J.R. just got back from visiting her hometown in California, which coincidentally is where the majestic humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) passes through on its winter migration to warmer waters and it's coincidental because J.R. is also a majestic beast who isn't too fond of the cold.

While at home J.R. ignored her family to make a podcast and shoot a video. Here's a sneak peak!

OMG Mommy Uretsky is the cutest!!!

Speaking of sneak peaks J.R. and her collaborator Kayo were included in the final issue of ASPECT: The Chronicle of New Media Art.

The newest issue is titled A Good Place To Stop and will be available to purchase soon. This is almost as exciting as a mammal's four chambered heart.

Because we're best friends I'm going to promote a thing I am doing on April 13th and I think you should check it out because I am really excited and because dance is a really healthy way to have fun and express yourself.

PIPPI ZORNOZA

Olneyville Housing Corporation  has received support for the Dirt Palace Olneyville Square Facade with a grant from the Rhode Island Foundation

Pippi will be attending the SVA Art Practice MFA program beginning this summer.
She's looking for a place to live/sublet in NYC June 20 - August 6
Contact her at dirtpalace at yahoo dot com if you have any leads.
Because her studio at the Dirt Palace will be vacant for that time - there is also a Dirt Palace studio sublet available.

JIEUN REINER

Jieun is at the end & in the final stages of many things, including waiting for her tulips to grow, her long-developing jewelry line, and no longer being cold.

In progress shot of some soon to be finished pieces in a pre-clean up, rough state:

Other than that she has been walking around in a blissful cloud composed of sunlight and anticipation of spring!!!!!

MUFFY BRANDT

Muffy has been a printing machine.

She was recently contacted by a wrestler in California to make custom ring gear for his new cyber themed wrestling persona!
It was an awesome project and led to perfecting printing on swimsuit material!

She also just wrapped up an order of printed bags for Paper Nautilus (Formerly Myopic Books) in Wayland Sq.

She loves doing custom print work on fabric and paper.
You should hire her to do anything from posters and t shirts to weird fantasy costumes.
She'll do the design too if you want!
Epochellipse.now@gmail.com

Late to join the century, Muffy just started a blog: www.blooddivine.tumblr.com
Check it out and send her pics of you wearing clothes she made!

Also, now through April 15th Muffy has a choose your own sale site wide on her Etsywww.muffybrandt.etsy.com
There's 2 sale options:
Choose between entering code FREESHIPPING (within the US), or HEART2HEART for 10% off, good on sale items too!.

You can also buy her leggings and tops at the RISD Alumni Sale Saturday May 4th from 10 am to 4pm on Benefit St.

While doing all this printing she listened to a lot of audiobooks, including John Ronson's "The Psychopath Test" and Andrew Solomn's "Far From the Tree," they were pretty amazing and highly recommended listening.

Mimi and Muffy just wrapped up a collaborative gig spray painting a panel for a yoga bloggers event, true!
They made some demented pink rainbow dolphin shattering a brick wall complete with the chakras and other colorful elements.  !!!! Maybe its the fumes, but they're pretty pumped about it!

THE WINDOW

This February's window artist is Priscilla Carrion

“Ducks!”

The scene in the window was of a small ladymade body of water containing a weird duck tribe in the middle of
their migration. They got a little lost and flustered, and like a deer in the headlights, just stopped. That was February 3rd 2013. Then they got blizzarded in. These birds were headed south for the winter, but started offlate in the season and don't fly. Everything's a little off these days around them, and they’re just trying to adapt to it. Summer stayed longer. Winter was late. They intuitively know that, so they’re trying to keep cool and calm, and just make it work. No one was left behind. One casualty. Death unknown.

This species of bird were vulnerable due to its small population. Through evolution they have adapted to swimming, floating on the waters surface (as shown here) and eating weeds and waste. The habitat they
found to survive in is the sewer system. Evolving underground  where they lacked predators, these species lost all anti-predator behaviors, as well as the ability to fly. Their original species is unknown. Something duck. Migrating underground is their first option always, but when they took a wrong turn they accidentally came up above the surface. February 28th they finally figured out which direction to head and quietly snuck back underground.

I like using old things to make other things, especially in sewing. I think a lot about traditional craftsmanship
and the textile industry, which has made me that much more interested in slow process design work and handmade textiles. I wanted to make something for the window with materials I already had. These ducks and scene were made using fabric scraps, mostly t-shirt jersey fabric collected (hoarded) over a few years, and mostly old dyes and a little paint.

PIPPI ZORNOZA

JOIN US!
Drawing from the Multiple, a print exhibit
curated by Johnny Adimando

Opening Reception: Thursday, February 28th   5:30pm to 7:00pm

Swirling Boars, screen print collage by Pippi Zornoza

Exhibiting Artists:
Courtney Sennish, Jessica Murray, Chase Taylor, Suruchi Kabra, Pippi Zornoza
Augustina Bello Decurnex, Simonette Quamina

Traditions maintain validity by avoiding the progression into routine.  Never is this more true than in discussion of printmaking in a contemporary context.  Common discourse of the fine art print most often displaces focus onto the marginalia; clean borders, even wiping, depth of etch, etc.  In classic fashion, prints are derived using a fixed-matrix to generate identical copies of the preset image.  The artists featured in this exhibition utilize and then manipulate various printmaking processes, both analog and digital.  In this context, techniques serve as starting points from which a multiple is established; then altered, recombined, and transformed to create one-of-a-kind works.  The works included thwart the aforementioned "routine" by seeing the print as a living document; a moveable artifact.  Each work invigorates the notion that the artwork does not stop once the ink passes from
or through a set of matrices.  The grouping outlines a view that the traditions of printmaking have not seen the end of their evolution, and are still wrought with potential and the possibility of extension in a myriad of exciting directions.

curator's statement, Johnny Adimando

Panel Discussion: Date to be Announced
Exhibit runs from February 28th to April 5th

OLIVIA

Olivia contributed a print to the portfolio accompanying the new album/multimedia project Night vision by Elliott Harvey of A Stick and A Stone. The portfolio also includes prints by Katrina Silander Clark, Erik Ruin, Annie Mok, Justin Duerr and others. In Elliott's words-

"Night Vision is a conceptual multimedia collaboration interweaving music, visual art, and performance to explore the polarities between the visible and invisible, the natural and the supernatural; internal experience of gender, senses of heightened awareness, and encounters with spirits of the unseen world. The music of Night Vision isthe upcoming album by A Stick and A Stone, which entwines creepy banjo, electric bass, fluttering harp, heavy percussion, and soaring vocal harmonies with lyrics alluding to cosmos, ghosts, inner gender, and apocalypse. Each song of Night Vision will be brought to light through corresponding pieces of performance and visual art. Accompanying the songs that invoked them, these will demonstrate how music, though invisible, can conjure images and movements in our bodies and minds."
You can find out more about the project here-

Also, Olivia will be joining Mimi Chrzanowski, Day-Day Williams, and Cathy G Johnson at Chicago Alternative

JIEUN

Jieun has been evaporating, precipitating, and melting in the form of snow this month. She has engaged in at least three major blizzards and one avalanche. A good chunk of time was devoted to just evolving in various nimbostratus clouds. Major hope: to hang out with hydrocarbons on Saturn's moon Titan sometime soon. We can probably expect her return to the human life-form sometime mid-March, but we all know it's no easy feat to escape the Hydrologic Cycle...

XANDER

Was trapped under a snow pile. Ate too much soup and chocolate. Also caught up with 100 hours of Stephen King audio books. And began experimenting with "mass" production of hand puppets that are likely too weird for any "mass" of people to ever want. They are on display at F.L.A. Gallery as part of a show called Dirty Fingers curated by Cinders Projects that features a long and somewhat mind blowing list of
print magicians all still making things with their living human hands. Here's where you can check out the online previews of prints:
