SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER WINDOW ARTIST RUE SAKAYAMA

Rue Sakayama is a multidisciplinary artist and photographer living and working in Providence, RI. She graduated from RISD FAV(Rhode Island School of Design, Film Animation Video) with a bachelor in Fine Arts in 2006. She is a contract commercial photographer with clients ranging from small independent artists and designers to larger commercial companies. Sakayama's artistic practice has a strong focus on craft spanning multiple mediums from photography to textile and fiber arts.

She uses her art practice to explore the spaces-in-between, the feelings of otherness that are experienced in a society that often lacks a nuanced viewpoint. She examines this otherness with a commitment to aesthetics, levity as a way to invite the viewer in.The first step in Sakayama’s practice is to ensure that her work is visually compelling in composition, shape, and color. Though she embraces formalism in this way, she is also compelled by the stories that can be imagined by the provocative nature of her work.

Storefront Window Gallery Projects are made possible in part through support from the City of Providence Arts Culture Tourism Department

*******UPDATES*******

EXYL

Hi I'm exyl! I'm new here but unfortunately I'm off in Connecticut this month on residency at ipark... I'm an animator working in analogue mediums and sound!

this is my room!!! I'm so glad to be here and so relieved to be moved in. i love my dining table that seats 8 people and takes up half my room!!!
this is me moving in

this is what i look like <3

I plan to host animation screening nights at DP in November when I'm back, so keep an eye out for that. In the meantime, my website is exyl.space and you can always reach me by email if you're interested in saying hi / talking animation / grabbing coffee

Q & I are new to Dirt Palace and thought it would be fun to Interview Each other for our First Digest. Here are some Questions from Q:::

1) What is something that you are hoping will shift or continue to grow in your practice this year?

I'm hoping my work gets more playful, more light, more easy breezy wishy washy fun and funny! I'm done with my melodrama era. Laughter and joy only in this new year.

2) Your work, although Mixed Media, has a really distinct visual language to it! What are the influences that inform your use of patterns, movement, and texture?

I came from a painting background, so I think that analogue background really informs my process now. Computers are an evil necessity to me, and I would rather use reams and reams of paper than sit at a tablet all day. I love marble, butter, silicon, chocolate. I love cloth and paper and the texture of grass. Artmaking is like a constant exercise in careful listening to find the new exciting tidbit of texture to expand into work.

3) Have you learned any cool or interesting facts lately? Tell them to me please! PLEASE! I WANT TO KNOW.

I learned that not all wasps are hornets, but all hornets are wasps. I learned this recently because of all the wasps in my studio ;)

4) Sorry, I've cast a spell and turned you into a Perfume! It's just a thing I do! YOU CAN'T CHANGE ME, but you CAN tell me what Ingredients go into your Spiritual Smell.

Hm... soap, alcohol (80%), lemongrass, sesame oil, sweat

5) How do you like to be Introduced? Is that different to how you like to be introduced in the context of your Art?

I introduce myself as exyl! But that's an acronym for my full name, which I use in my films. I don't think of it as a deadname it's just a sleeping name. Context is important in artmaking so I like people to have access to my history if they're trying to watch my work.
That's all from me! see u soon

Q (John-Francis Quiñonez)

Howdy there!
My full name is John-Francis Quiñonez (they/them), but friends and loved ones call me Q ~ this is your formal invitation into that.

I am a Poet (This October Marks the One Year Anniversary of my First Collection "Keep Your Little Lights Alive (Poems After Kate Bush's 'Hounds of Love' and Others)" out with Write Bloody), Events Coordinator (Columbus Theatre, Lost Bag), Maker of Ice Creams (shout out Big Feeling), and Mixed Media Artist (recently dabbling in Riso over at Binch/Q.A.W.).

You'll likely find me Lost in the Middle Distance, Staring out over a Body of Water or Tiny Coffee. I walk a lot and people tend to say to me "I saw you walking" to which I say "yes, I walk a lot."

<<I hardly update my website (www.johnfrancisquinonez.com) but am most active on Instagram (my handle is Q_Buckaroo)>>

*Exyl & I are new here to Dirt Palace and Thought it would be Cute to interview Each Other for our first Contribution to the Digest. Here are some questions from Exyl*

1. describe your work in 3 words, 3 sounds and 3 objects
Words

-Unwieldy

-Flightful

-Ever-emerging

Sounds

-The "Thonque" a glass bottle makes when your Pop your Thumb out of the Opening of it.

-Did you know that Jackrabbits Howl? That!
-Loon-call, particularly as it ripples the surrounding water

Objects

-The Bluejay Windmill from my Abuelo's House

-Bowl of Citrus
-Bundle of Creosote

2. what do you never get tired of?
Learning from other people. I'm particularly insatiable when it comes to facts about the Natural World and/or Folklore, but generally speaking could listen to someone talk about their Fields of Interest and Passion forever.

3. what do you have very little patience for?
People being Needlessly Rude or Unkind - anything displays that Someone has either Seldom been told "No" or has been taught to gather Attention by Manipulation.
Also the Middle-high frequency of Alarms & Sirens. Probably due to years of PA-related hearing damage.

4. what question would you ask a new friend?
I suspect that folks are pretty 50/50 on this based on the ceaseless eyerolls but my go-tos are:
"What are you doing for Joy lately?"
& "What is filling your days?"
Passive chit chat is totally fine but I'd prefer to be on the fast track to either "these are the intricacies of my heart" or "I saw a cool bird."

5. if you could give everyone one piece of advice right now, what would it be?
I try not to frame things as direct advice, but reflect on decisions I've made.
In times of Chaos, I've learned to Slow things down & that by doing so One often ends up Ahead and Gathered than Behind and Scattered.

6. what's on your horizon?
Leaning into the seasonal shift and settling into my new home - seeing what these changes do for my sense of play and wellness of my heart.

I'm recording the Audiobook version of my Book and Releasing in 2 Parts over the Next Month or so! I write for the purpose of sharing rooms with folks, and so have approached the recording as a continuous read to a big, empty room.

A L S O - My World & Joy is Events. I've added some Spicy Recs to the DP HOT EVENTS list, but particularly want to shout out OCTOBER 19th at the RISD METCALF AUDITORIUM where I will be reading Poems Alongside Performances from JR URETSKY & ELI NIXON. Absolutely not to be missed. Tell everyone you know.

Lovely Talking with You,

SES HOUGHTON
Hellooo! it’s been a busy month or so!

October is always a hectic time for me because I want to do all of the “””fall things,””” while also working in a haunted house on the weekends. I feel neutral about halloween, but I do really like hanging out with loved ones while dressed up, so this time is a good excuse :) At Scary Acres I do airbrush makeup and scaring! I love getting the opportunity to work with the airbrush. I had only used it a couple times before this and I really feel confident with it now! I wish I took more pictures of the makeup looks I’ve done so far, but I am Always a chronic picture forgetter :/

It’s a little hard to see, but I made the nurse dress that I’m wearing. I’ve been getting back into sewing and it’s felt so good! Cosplay has felt unattainable because conventions feel too scary to attend, so making something I can wear is comforting.

I have been preparing for a surgery at the end of the month and working my 100 gigs to be able to take a break in November has been exhausting. I’m so happy to have little tasks, but I feel like I struggle with what is Enough, even with a budget and a plan!!!

Anyway, I got to do a cutie tattoo trade with my lovely friend and former Dirt Palace resident, Mimi! Check them out:

You can see here that I forgot to take a picture again after we were done, so I took a picture when we were eating dinner! (whoops) I’ve loved her tattoos for so long and I feel really excited to be deepening our friendship!
I hope the rest of your October is enlightening! Have fun and be safe!

NAFFISATOU KOULIBALY

i thought, possibly, with the arrival of lovely autumn (and the impending doom of winter lurking off in the distance) that my life would slow down. the exact opposite actually happened and i've got a bunch of new adventures for the future.
1. i'm 1/3 of the provslam co-director team!!! joined by the lovely chrysanthemum tran and astrid drew!!
2. i'm a fellow!!! (that sounds funny lol) i got accepted into the as220 emerging artist fellowship, beginning this month
3. writing, writing, reading, writing, reading. just trying to catch everything in my hands and cherish it. trying to enjoy this life thing if i'm forced to do it. i swear i'm having fun!!! proof of me having fun below

KAI VAN VLACK

Hi hi. Last month I joined Greek dark ambient/trip hop artist Abyss X on guitar at her album release shows in New York City and McAllen, Texas. It was so exciting to play a style that’s so different from what I usually play and to support such an incredible vocalist.

On November 4th I’ll be showing some recent work at Peter Fuller’s Speed Shop and then hosting a show (I’m not playing it) at Mayday, right across from the mills. For the art show, IYKYK, ask a punk, ask me. For the punk show, here’s the info:

Anyway, that's where I'm at. Hope you're well!
<3 Kai
