SITE VISIT #1 - LA CENTRALE GALERIE POWERHOUSE

2016! The Dirt Palace is getting strategic (making a plan)!
As part of this process we're visiting some organizations/space that we admire and hope to learn from.

This post is part of a series of profiles of spaces that we have visited.
This project is supported by the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation.

90% of funding is from the government in different capacities (city, province, national). There is very little fundraising. One anonymous donor contributes funds specifically for a bi annual recognition prize that awards $5000 to a woman artist and $2,500 to two runners up.

Founded in 1973, La Centrale Galerie Powerhouse is one of Quebec’s oldest artist-run centers. The gallery exhibits and serves a broad spectrum of artists and projects, including many who are often under-represented within established art institutions. Its mandate expands on a history of feminist art practices and aims to provide a platform for contemporary art that is informed by feminist and gender theory, as well as intercultural and trans-disciplinary practices. This involves the development of artistic and professional exchange at the local, national and international levels. La Centrale exhibits work by artists of all genders. To encourage intergenerational dialogue, they welcome artists at any stage of their career. The programming of the gallery reflects the interests and commitments of its members.

The Binders!

X:        We had arrived in Montreal the night before meeting with La Central and spread out our collection of their publications on the floor of the apartment where we were staying, and marveled over our stash. Over the summer I had read Feminisms Eletrique from cover to cover in one fell over-excited swoop.  It was a beautiful tome filled with an awesome array of writing ranging from theoretically inspired reflections on internal changes that the gallery was going through to an interview with Chris Kraus and interviews between artists. I had put sticky notes on the pages around an article written by the members of Lesbians on Ecstasy and left the book in the bathroom of the Dirt Palace. The book began to get dog-eared in the best way, from the love of daily reading.  Our full collection of their publications numbers thirteen, and includes some exhibition catalogs. As we discussed our plan for meeting with La Central, we were worried that we’d have TOO MANY QUESTIONS!
We had lunch, drank lots of coffee, and headed towards the gallery.  There was someone sitting on the bench out front, and I got a little twist in my stomach thinking things to myself like: ‘are we too early?’, ‘do we look like lunatics?’ ‘what’s the name of the person who we’re meeting with again?’
P: I looked at my notes, We were to meet Véroniqe Boilard the Artistic Director and a board member Emma-Kate Guimond. We wondered if that was one of them on the bench outside.
X: As we got closer, we turned to each other and said in unison “is that Coral?”
Coral Short is an friend from Montreal who we got to know when she did a self directed residency at the Dirt Palace in 2014.  We were trying to meet up with her on this visit, but it seemed like she had taken the proverbial horse by the reigns and come and found US! This was the first sign that this whole process of conducting site-visits was going to be an exercise in improvisation – this was our first interview, it hadn’t even started yet & all of our plans were going out the window!  Coral is a force like no other and we always want her on our team so we brought her into the gallery, which was really great, because she helped us to dive right into a conversation about how Francophone and Anglophone feminisms differ, are concurrent, and how both strains have shaped the political and creative landscapes of Montreal.
Véroniqe, Emma-Kate & Coral were very open in their characterizations. The basic sense was that Anglophone feminism was more queer influenced and quicker to embrace trans inclusivity, Francophone culture brought to the table a deep history of political activism and fierceness.
P:       In fact -- The path La Central was to follow includes organizational representation in political demonstration which is something unheard of within arts organizations in the U.S. The political visibility of the organization was attributed to the “fierceness of activism within francophone culture.” ( We keep quoting their articulation of the word fierce because it was such a powerful sentiment!!)
X:       We wound our way through the gallery’s origin story. La Central had started in 1973, they fully incorporated in 1974, they originally worked out of an apartment, as they grew they moved. In total La Central has occupied six different locations. From the start there has been a rejection of hierarchical structure in the management, both in terms of the staff and the board. For the sake of registering with the state there are traditional positions like ‘board president’ but on the web-site these distinctions are not announced. On the staff level, there are different positions and roles, but the organization is flat with all of the staff reporting to and working closely with the board.  The organization is structured as a membership organization – meaning that members have two annual meeting and vote for a slate of board members. The only organizations that I can think of in Providence who are structured in this way are DARE and ONA – i.e. very grassroots political organizations.
P: Much about La Central’s structure and operations today practically embodied the philosophies and ethics proposed by this feminism of the 70’s in creating alternatives to top down power structures. Véronique and Emma-Kate self described as conduits to members — not fulfilling personal visions but supporting and materializing visions of the membership.  An engaged membership directed the path of the programing. Those bi-anual general assemblies are times when many decisions are made. The budget is even presented to members in detail, and members ask about specific budget lines expecting reasoning from staff and an ability to explain the budget.
X: Veronique and Emma-Kate had both been involved with the organization in the current capacities for a relatively short period of time. Veronique has been in her post for less than a year, and Emma-Kate has been on the board for about 3 years. Institutional memory is created through a rigorous documentation process – their office shelves are home to about a hundred binders with neon pink spines detailing the past five years of every show and set of meeting minutes. Archives from the period prior to five years are stored at Concordia University and are accessible to researchers and the general public.
P: YEAH! What I found most inspiring about La Central (even outside of their horizontal approach to decision making and operations, and political visibility) was their systematic documentation and publications projects. The documentation practice is rigorous and beautiful.  Each year housed in different colored binders.(NOT JUST PINK BINDERS XANDER!!! I swear you only see hot pink!!!) Accompanying the minutes and administrative paperwork are all event posters, postcards, articles written , Images of the exhibition (digital as well as printed images).  The beauty of their promotional materials is also inspiring. The organization has incorporated a publishing practice in conjunction with this data and historical document collection. The books are beautiful objects, each designed in a different format.  The content of the books is not directly related to the organization documentation but a snapshot of the art work and ideas circulating at the time.  A writing committee creates the copy for these publications and although the staff did not seem to be 100 % on the same page as me — I see the the writing as a wonderful space for reflection on the philosophies and thoughts of the membership — through articulation they are giving these thoughts materiality and presence where otherwise they may have never been fully realized.
There is also an educational committee who has published a book on how to give certain workshops as an instructional and professional development tool for members.  This book outlined images to use for specific lectures (for example: feminist art history) along with topical subjects and prompts. They formalized and broke down the process so that individual members then had a workbook to work from (and in the process the capacity to earn income from doing so)
X: When asked if there was an organizational practice that was unique to La Central that they were proud of, Veronique and Emma-Kate took a moment to think. Coral jumped in, “You guys organize your members to participate together in political actions”.  Veronique and Emma-Kate looked at us, as if they were surprised that this was not a common practice – their eyes said: ‘you mean that it’s rare for a gallery to show up together in the street to support a variety of social causes’.  I thought for a minute. It’s not rare for artist’s to be political, and it’s not rare for them to be activists, but it’s rare that an exhibition space is also an organization that has put consistent energy for decades into getting artists into the streets TOGETHER, for a wide range of social issues.  I thought about last winter’s Black Lives Matter actions, and how almost every present and past member of the Dirt Palace who still lived in Providence was out there in the streets, and how we had in some round-about way supported each other in our political growth, but we’d never been systematic or super intentional about it.  Would it make sense for us to be?  How might this fit in with our current culture, and general sense that we aim to be open to people approaching feminism from a variety of philosophies, experiences and backgrounds?

We Loved Your Diamond Eyes

DIRT PALACE

DECEMBER 2015

We Loved Your Diamond Eyes

Louise DeCurtis
1979-2015
It is with much sadness in our hearts that we report the loss of our beloved friend, former Dirt Palace member, and brilliant artist Louise DeCurtis. Her rebellious spirit and scintillating sense of humor will be sorely missed. Louise's irreverent Shit Talker zines are some of our libraries  most prized possessions (but don't just take our word for it that they are AMAZING, they also exist in the MOMA's collection and are featured in MOMA's historical compendium of women artists - MODERN WOMEN). It was an honor to have known her and to belong to her Sisterhood of the Snake. Our love goes out to all of Louise's friends and family.
This spring we plan to have a memorial ceremony for Louise at the Dirt Palace in conjunction with the creation of a permanent installation based on her art work. We don't have a date set in stone, so if you'd like to participate but need to plan travel in advance, please be in touch. In the meantime we are trying to compile as many images of her work as we possible so that we can archive her legacy on the web. Do you have any of Louise's work (Paintings, photographs, zines, writing, flyers, drawings, etc)? If you do, we'd love to get a digital image for our archive. Please send any images to dirtpalace@yahoo.com

PANZ

Ongoing collaborative installation from Dirt Palace members Alison Nitkiewicz and
Pippi Zornoza (PANZ) is now in the AS220 women’s bathroom.

December = Days of Masks nights of quilts, afternoons mailing stuff at the post office.
“We don't know much about Masks in this culture, partly because the church sees the Mask
as pagan, and tries to suppress it wherever
it has the power (the Vatican has a museum full
of Masks confiscated from the 'natives'), but also because this culture is usually hostile to
trance states. We distrust spontaneity and try to replace it with reason” - Keith Johnstone
Impro
Winter as one long spontaneous performance mostly indoors. But keep me making the
walk to the post office by ordering some stuff! 50 Lampshades of Grey won't last long, and last
year's Trouble anthology makes an awesome gift. Some prints, tee-shirts, masks are
available at my store through the mail, but most everything on my web-site (posters, dolls

etc) can likely be bought – just inquire. Always open to trades, deals, offers of useful
services and cold cash discounts for stuff bought direct outta the studio.
PS – "in progress" quilt pictured above features patches by past dirt pals Sam Merit and
Mickey Z check out their rad shops too!

DANIELLA BEN-BASSAT

AUGUST WINDOW ARTIST- SIMON SLOWINSKI
Wave Nets is six panel silkscreen mono-print created for the Dirt Palace window. Simple "nets" constructed with string and tape where used in the printing process to create overlapping chaotic grids of color and texture.
Simon Slowinski is a artist and printmaker living in Providence Rhode Island and Brattleboro Vermont.

SEPTEMBER WINDOW ARTIST- NINA RUELLE

Meat Week showcases a series of tapestries that delve into the shiny world of mass-marketed American femininity. They are works of meticulously crafted crap, turning the shelves of Walmart’s beauty aisle and dollar store decadence into sickly sweet tableaus that hint at the carnal underpinnings of our desire. Under the watchful eyes of Uncle Sam, swathes of rhinestones sparkle in the pink glow of vanity lights, rows of tampons wing glorified sanitary napkins, and heart-shaped sperm swim in a sea of fake fur and lace-frilled eggs. But even Uncle Sam’s blind eyes can’t miss the fact that pearl-filled condoms burst and decay and that for one week out of every four, some women feast to satisfy their anemic cravings.
Nina Ruelle is currently in residence at the Dirt Palace. You can see more of her work at www.ninaruelle.com

*****UPDATES*****

O HORVATH

O is stoked on leather weather, chasing the cat and baking stuff in not-100-degree heat!

They will be at COMIC ARTS BROOKLYN on Saturday November 7th in (you guessed it) Brooklyn's Our Lady of Mt Carmel Church. They will have old books, new books (???), shirts and whatever else they find in the basement.....

DANIELLA BEN-BASSAT

Daniella is currently in Montreal, where she will be for the next 6 weeks doing a residency at Studio XX - a feminist center for technological exploration. There, she plans on making motor based sculptural sound loops, honing her Arduino skills, and learning how to drive 2 blocks without getting honked at.  Below is a photo of the street laughing at her parking job.

Nina spent the end of her summer in a haze of satin, pearls, and tinsel, preparing "Meat Week" for installation in the Dirt Palace Window. She also had a piece in the Mission Gallery's collaboration with FANG at the CityArts Gallery show "Art as Activism /// Activism as Art." Since then, she has been printing posters for Magic Lantern and updating her website (check it out! www.ninaruelle.com).
To combat her lack of summer adventure, she has been finding innovative ways to feel as though she is in the great outdoors.

Also if you want to pretend to be Nina for a month, you're in luck! She's going away in December, and looking for someone to sublet her room for 4-6 weeks around that time.
DECEMBER-ISH SUBLET ALERT: $100/week for a huge lofted room (big window, lots of light, plants galore), studio space (private studio with table, also shared access to silk screening equipment, a C&P letterpress, a wood shop, a band room, and an animation studio), a huge communal kitchen, 6 awesome housemates, and a cat named Baby!

Xander has been living in Nebraska learning about bugs and the popcorn factory, and bugs and the fields, and bugs and the glorious nature of prairie thunderstorms, and bugs and  the Otoe tribe, and bugs and the Kansas-Nebraska Act, and bugs and the karaoke bar in a town with a population of 214, and bugs and sunrise, and bugs and the history of the sunbonnet, bugs and straight gridded roads each exactly a mile apart lined with wild hemp fighting it out with ragweed to be the closest thing to the sun. Plants that are holdovers from a time before this land was part of this country. A time not even that long ago.

JIEUN REINER

Wow! Jieun has had a truly amazing and exciting summer filled with more beauty than one could ask for. Now she is back to the daily grind, and working on a few new projects too, so stay tuned. In the meantime, here is a memory:

Al took a trip to Cali and met up with Jieun. She lost her phone and gained beautiful memories. It rocked!!!
Artistically, she is exploring new horizons......stay tuned!!

DIRT PALACE
JULY 2015

JEWELS FOR YOUR EYES

NEW MEMBER OPENING AT THE DIRT PALACE

Seeking experimental feminist with projects in need of a space for getting things done! Preferably things that will make use of our facilities: LEGAL live/work space! screen printing shop, letterpress, animation stand, music rehearsal room, wood shop, large shared space for building bigger projects, library. Base rent is $288 + $67 that goes towards the heat kitty = $355/month + utilities. The total is usually around $420 (this includes electric and internet). Members are also expected to attend weekly meetings, monthly work days, do regular chores, keep the kitchen clean, and take a leadership role over running some aspect of the collective project vaguely falling under the conceptual roof of “The Dirt Palace”. If you are interested, all of this (and more!) will be explained in our epic 20 page document called “the occupancy and consciousness agreement” that we will e-mail you upon request. Residencies at the Dirt Palace average about 24 months, but we are open to people with short, medium, or long term interest. Opening is for September with some flexibility towards an October start date. If you are interested getting in touch sooner than later would be better! Send an e-mail to us at dirtpalace@yahoo.com

BREAKING NEWS! 2015/2016 Strategic Planning
The Dirt Palace was awarded a grant from the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation for strategic planning work with the Alliance of Artist Communities as consultants. Through May 2016 Pippi and Xander will be researching artist run spaces, feminist projects, communes, diy organizations, and residencies, with an eye towards organizational sustainability and best practice. We will then be working with the expert insight of AAC to craft a mid-range strategic plan.  Is there a project or space that has been super inspiring to you that you think that we HAVE TO KNOW ABOUT?  We’d love to hear more. No project too new/too old or too punk/too institutional. As our research develops, we'll be sharing profiles of projects that we’re looking at on our blog. So keep an eye out there! We’ll also be compiling a big binder of research in our library as a resource for other folks working on developing artists/diy spaces.
If you were tuned into last month’s newsletter, you’ll know that this planning couldn’t happen at a better as we’re now a 100% legit legal live/work space.
