After Spirit: Channara Tom “Philly” Pheap; Community Conversation and Memorial

ARTIST TALK EVENT:
Storefront Window Gallery Artists -
Vuthy Lay & Victoria Xu in conversation
with Vatic Kuumba

at DP Classic - 14 Olneyville Square
Monday September 19th 6:00-7:00pm

After Spirit: Channara Tom “Philly” Pheap, is an altar composed of offerings accumulated from family, friends, and community members over the course of 1,111 days.
This place was created for his loved ones to reclaim Channara’s memory after he was murdered by Officer Dylan Williams of the Knoxville Police Department. Although the search for justice in his case continues, the power of connecting other impacted families is immediate.

The installation features a series of interviews, framed photographs and public shrines that invites others who have lost their own to state violence to also share with the public and learn about his story. The community is welcomed to contribute their own portraits to any of the 33 lantern altars on behalf of their beloved lost or losing time to the criminal injustice system.

On the evening of September 19th, we ask the public to bring candles, incense and offerings for this memorial. We will provide writing utensils and materials for anyone who would like to leave a letter or share their thoughts.

WINDOW

JULY - AUGUST WINDOW ARTISTS: RAJAN AMARU and NORMAN OSPINA

Destrucción / Construcción
Destruction / Construction

Rajon Amaru and Norman Alexander are a child-parent team from San Francisco/Oakland
who have been developing an Art Project called Destruction / Construction since 2020.

Originally started as a means to reuse ‘older toys’ and as an at-home-pandemic-activity to
learn to use tools in a proper an safe manner, it involves taking apart and collaging/gluing
back together toy parts to make surprising recombinations that draw from Rajon Amaru’s
4th & 5th Grade classroom lessons & current socio-political events.

RA & NA also draw, spray paint, learn and grow closer together through creativity,
one-on-discussion & expanding on what is presented in the Oakland Unified School District
where RA is presently in the 6th Grade.

While now living in California, Norman A. Ospina Q. has deep roots in the Olneyville neighborhood
of Providence, RI.  NA lived on Erastus Street while attending HS in the late 80’s, held his first
jobs at St. Theresa's church and later (early 2000’s) was an active member with the Olneyville
Neighborhood Association (ONA).

UPDATES ************

FROM THE PEOPLE OF THE PALACE!!

NATASHA BRENNAN

Hi!! pretty good late summer time!! I've been drawing and quilting (!) as much as possible
and spending time with lots of lovely people- family and friends. I'm looking forward to
tabling at MICE in October in Boston so if you're around be sure to say hi :) Thimble the
cat update: she is good and did not catch the alive mouse that was stuck in our kitchen
sink (Avery and I took him outside and he is hopefully still running free)

ELLEN (LN) FOSTER

This summer has been primarily work, sickness, and other health concerns, but I tied to
waylay it with as many beavertail trips and Carrs Pond explorations as possible. I also had
fun making flyer for a show that did not end up happening, but may happen in some
iteration eventually. I went to Block island for the first time around my birthday with bikes,
and we camped even though everyone told us it was impossible and to not even try. We
found some kind interesting things close to where we slept.

An non-academic experimental (but kinda academic) piece that I wrote with my good friend
Shannan Lee Hayes for the journal REFUSE came out this past month. You can read that
here.

I recently played a show at black lack that went well and may have some good video,
hoping to share eventually. Here is the flyer for now, created by Sean Halpin.

No upcoming shows to speak of, but I’m excited to have some more opening of my
capacities into the Fall and Winter.

KAI VAN VLACK
I don’t have much creative work to show this month but I would like to promote a couple of
events I’m involved with.

On Saturday, September 10th: RIOT RI, the youth music education org that I work with will
be holding our Battle of the Patriarchy Community Concert and Vendor Fair. The show is
free to all and will be held in the Providence Innovation District Park at from 1 PM - 6 PM

On Friday, September 16th: I will be speaking on a panel at the New Haven Pride Center
as part of their 2022 Pride Panels and Conversations series. We will be discussing the intersectional history of Transfemmes in Lesbian community. The panel will be
livestreamed on facebook and youtube.

Reading/Listening/Seeing
Sabrina Scott - Witchbody
Gentle diary comics with modern witchcraft 101 baked in.

Këkht Aräkh - Pale Swordsman
Frostbitten and romantic lamentations. I think it’s really rare for black metal bands to use
the “radio in a trash-can” recording style as anything other than a weird flex but the
inclusion of warm ghostly piano on this album really highlights how powerful and elegant
this production style can be.

Reservation Dogs
The best tv show I’ve watched in years. Indigenous slice of life stories you’ve never heard
but always knew in your heart.

YSANEL TORRES

YSANEL assisted a group of talented artists from Amber Art and Design, a collective of
public artists based in Philadelphia, on the largest mural in Rhode Island History! Located
on the exterior of the Garrahy Court House in Providence, RI, this new mural features
800+ colors and a Moose - honoring the moose that once lived on the land that it’s on,
which was once primarily called Moshassuck by the indigenous people of the area.
Go see it in person!

JOSEPHINE DEVANBU

PIPPI ZORNOZA

WOW WOW WOW
HARPY going on tour this fall!!!
Check out tour dates below.... Maybe we'll be flowing through your town.... with delicious
shirts and tapes in tow. Not quite as cool as the time the download codes were wrapped
around grapes in plastic bloodshot eye capsules.... but still delicious.
