November Embers!

fancy text that says "the dirt palace" in a dusty, dark teal. the word "the" is smaller and each letter is on a diagonal line while the words "dirt" and "palace" are the same size as each other and in a straight line.

⚜ NEWSLETTER

Concerned about food insecurity, because you have food stamps? Or because you don’t want to live in a world where your community is forced to go without? Interlace makes grants to Providence-area artists including modest monthly emergency grants.  Two possibilities:

#1 APPLY for a SNAP Grant. A short application that asks for contact info, limited evidence of an artistic practice, and benefits documentation qualifies you for a minimum $75 Stop and Shop digital gift card.

#2 DONATE to the Interlace Emergency Grant Fund to support artists in your community. All funds will go directly to artists.

Funding for SNAP Grant provided by the Rhode Island Foundation Basic Human Needs Program and by YOU (see #2 above). The deadline for this grant is November 7. This is a new grant and we will offer at least one round. If demand from qualified applicants in the first round exceeds our resources we will make grants on a lottery basis.

In the spirit of generosity and compassion for fellow visual artists, applicants are encouraged to apply using the honor system: if your livelihood or well-being does not require this grant, please consider forgoing an application to increase the chances for whom these grants would be most beneficial.

Interlace Emergency Grants will continue as usual this month and every month.

Emergency Grants are limited to Providence-area visual artists.

SNAP Grants are open to all Providence-area artists, regardless of discipline.

Qualifying artists are eligible to apply for both opportunities.

WINDOW GALLERY

OCTOBER - NOVEMBER WINDOW ARTIST ELIZABETH DUFFY

Trained in sculpture, painting, drawing, jewelry, and textile conservation, Elizabeth Duffy is a multidisciplinary artist whose compulsive process and love of material culture drive her to mine the revelatory in the ordinary. Her recent work examines the intersection of domestic life and surveillance. Her work is influenced by feminist art, an itinerant way of life, and looking at the overlooked.

From Elizabeth, “In my current project, Wearing, I unravel the braided rugs common in old houses, to make them into what they may have been. Through this work I acknowledge the labor of anonymous women makers through time. Braided rugs were made by working class women from moth-eaten coats, worn blankets and clothing; their wear reveals the imprint of humanity going about their daily lives. I unbraid each rug, then press and sew the strips into cloth. The unbraiding reveals a myriad hidden patterns and exuberant hues. Lines of dotted holes indicate the years of tread marks eroding the fabric. Leopard-like spots of dirt pressed into the exposed parts of the braids reveal human movement through time. The process of making these is something like an excavation, uncovering what the rugs hide in between their braids, and admiring the craft and labor of each anonymous maker. I keep the remaining original rug tethered to the object, to allude to the cyclical nature of materials and shifting boundaries of the objects and their lives. Often I make pieces with specific women in mind, from historic to contemporary, and I invite contemporary artists to model the pieces, connecting and listening to voices past and present — fragile and strong, loud, seething and quiet; no longer invisible”.
