February - March Word Shelter artist: Ren L[i]u |
|
|
|
Ren L[i]u (they/he/他) is their 姥姥‘s grandchild first. Second, they are bracketed [for now]. While still figuring out how to explain themself, Ren is grateful for all the spaces where they do not need to—those rooted in disability justice, their QTPOC poetry communities, and of course, their grandma’s kitchen.
In Ren's TJ work facilitating community accountability processes and crisis response, he has grown to turn to poetry and spoken word as creative practices of survival and pleasure. Ren’s poems explore healing through wound, trans death/remembering, crip intimacy, ocean embodiments, and are all homage to their ancestral lineages—blood and chosen. In other words, Ren is always trying to make altars out of everything, including, if not especially, the rocks in their pockets. They are a 2023 Zoeglossia Disability Poetics fellow and part of the 2023 Providence Poetry Slam team.
Ren’s performances and poetry can be found in fifth wheel press, the Passion of X trans of color film anthology, commissioned/adapted into opera, and regularly at the Providence Poetry Slam where they are a proud staff member. Ren works toward anti-carceral survivor justice for a sexual assault and domestic violence coalition and also co-organizes the Spoonie Uni Project, a Black and Indigenous centered disability justice and mutual aid fund. Oh myyy it’s been a crazy month but a relieving one!! I got a new job and the work is pretty chill and also really interesting as someone interested in making books and my own study tools that are catered to my ADHD. I’m finally figuring out little systems for myself in ways that support moving my life forward; getting to feel like I’m making a true individual of myself in a way. I’ve been apart of so many communities and homes before now that I’ve never gotten the time and space to explore and decide what aesthetic or style I have. I’m enjoying all these little ways of discovering myself and I look forward to seeing the other ways I get to explore it. I’ve also been working on furthering my sneaker customs business to launch and it’s wild how many things have been logistic after logistic.

I found this photo my father took of me in his Che Guevara shirt and Omega Psi Phi pledging uniform, circa 2006. I remember wanting to smile for the photo because I got to wear what seemed like his amour, and him specifically telling me to instead put on my best grit face and to put my fist up. Approaching the first year anniversary of his death, I find these moments of learned strength and perseverance to be like little watermelon seeds implanted in my head to nourish me along this journey.

Howdy Dirt Palacials,
Let these early March days remind you that Spring is not only a concept ~ she is forreal and a’comin down the mountain. I love Spring. It is my season. I love the muck, the buds, the goslings & their hissing guardians, the quick Woony, and even the obnoxious and desperate ways in which New Englanders don’t fully grasp the erratic but consistent weather systems that they were raised in. Change is inevitable. Flowers will soon begin to bloom. Catch me, taking the ”L” on wet jeans, stubbornly sitting outdoors and sipping coffee on snow-drenched benches!
It is my joy & honor to be the Dirt Palace Window Gallery Artist ~ on display Now & through April 11th! More on that elsewhere in this newsletter!
Only a few things to plug this time:
* April 16th at As220 in Providence ~ I will be reading in support of Muggs Fogarty’s release of their extended book “Sex Camel.” It will be the poetry event of the year! The lineup is bonkers! Don’t miss it!
* May 16th at Nova Arts in Keene, NH ~ I’m back at The Thing in the Spring and honored to have curated another stacked Northeast Poetry Showcase amidst a really beautiful day of Music. Passes are still available!
* I’ve started a Substack ~ a new means of finding a sense of Play in Social Media. I will be moving a lot of my efforts to promote and expand on my Arts & Events practice there and I hope you will follow!
* We are a’scoopin and a’screamin at Big Feeling Ice Cream, and have an ever busy lineup of shows at Lost Bag. As we all begin to emerge, I hope to see you out and about!

ses the countdown is HERE!! i’ve already begun my purging of items i have held onto for years despite not wanting them anymore! some infrequently used items have made their way into boxes! i purchased a good chefs knife and a pan because tons of my kitchen stuff is at a stinky ex’s house and therefore doesn’t exist anymore (major L on the loss, but Major Win on new knife and pan)
i’ve been tattooing a lot! it’s been so much fun! i keep remembering kai saying that you have to actually reach out and make your presence known because ultimately you’re not that important despite being your own Whole Self and matter to you and your loved ones from past present and future!!! who would have guessed it?? her advice was helpful. (DISCLAIMER: many would have guessed this) |

overall for me, things are good! strife is abundant right now and i’m pretty stressed out, but i’m really trying to do my best with the cards i’ve been dealt! Things are scary, but we can be together. |

Hello from the make shift sugar shack. Boiling the blood of my backyard Norway Maples down into syrupy sweetness. Reading at RiffRaff on Friday the 13th. Megan Milks will be in town reading from Mega Milk at long last! Hooray! The last installment of Wild Goose Chase was titled RI and the RIse of the RIso. Now that Secret Mall Apartment is on Netflix and everybody is watching it, maybe you want to read my essay about it - its HERE. I’m currently working on an essay about the popular RI based Instagram page What’s Going On In Rhode Island. Hello hello! This month has been a beautiful combination of hibernation and now poking my nose out and smelling the beautiful spring air! I have been doing some plein air painting and self portraits as I process some personal transition as well as the transition into springtime! Those are for my eyes only, but I will share some smaller machine system paintings from last month below! Thinking about connective tissues and reading an essay “Outing Texture” by Renu Bora! Beautiful stuff! Would recommend for the material fetishists amongst us! Also just finished Etel Adnan’s In the Heart of Another Country, whose painterly language I really enjoyed and who’s reflections on her time spent in Lebanon and on the impact of the Iraq war on her daily life I seriously appreciated.
