JANUARY WINDOW ARTIST: CJ HILL
C.J. Hill is an artist who strives to make drawing an adventurous and empathetic act. Born 1990 in New York State, he now lives and works in Providence Rhode Island. He has been an artist in residence at the Lijiang Studio in Lashi-Hai, China, and at the Art Farm Residency program in Nebraska, and has exhibited his work in New York, Rhode Island and the Yunnan Provence of China.
Sometime last year I was sitting and looking out a window at the bus stop across the street from where I sat. It was the bus stop just down the street form the Dirt Palace, a place where I stand often on my way to work, surrounded by others also standing, also waiting. I sat looking, like I were watching myself, and into my mind came the word ‘Pedestrian’ and so I looked the word up.
from Latin Pedester - "plain or common" literally "on foot" as contrasted with Equester- "on horseback".
from  Pedes – “a walker, one who walks.”
“Foot soldier.”
“Pawn.”
 From Pēs – “foot,”
I read this and was struck by how our hierarchies are rooted in our language, by how divisive this word was; those with more and those with only their feet. What value was being assigned to them? The image of people standing across the street persisted through thoughts of so many humans on this earth, categorized and diminished, waiting and forgotten in one sense or another.
I decided to draw this etymology as it struck me then; figures who might be waiting for a bus or might be waiting for something much greater. I made the piece “pe’des.ter” for the window at the dirt palace.
This project was made possible through support from the City of Providence Department of Art, Culture + Tourism Department

*****UPDATES*****

NORAA NEITHER KAPLAN

What did I even do this month? Well on a whim last night, I wrote, recorded, edited, and released an entire album. It's amazing what you can do if your standards are low enough.

If you live in Worcester or Philly, you can see me play music this month. (Worcester on the 8th, Philly on Valentines's Day ♡) If you live in Providence, you can see me read poetry on the 18th. No matter where you live, you can watch my neverending humiliation unfold on twitter dot com or be swept away with my tragic beauty on instagram (@endofmen)

One thing to add is that I'm looking for work, gigs, and income these days. If you know of any leads for any queer- and disability-friendly opportunities, please do let me know (email me at noraakaplan@gmail.com)

Happy new year! Happy new mobility aid! In January, I bought my first cane. It is covered in a metallic butterfly print. I think my cane is beautiful, sad and empowering. Should I name the cane?

GABY HURTADO-RAMOS

january 2020, a banger:
✣ I gave a talk about print, portraiture, and immigration justice as part of an exhibit I made illustrations for at the Jewish History Museum and Holocaust Center in Tucson, Arizona. The exhibit is called Asylum//Asilo, and it centers the stories of people seeking asylum and our responsibility to end the abuse of migrants and asylum seekers. If you’re in Tucson  you should go see it, the exhibit is up through May.
✣ I also taught a bookmaking workshop in Tucson at the museum, where we connected with a loved one/ancestor using image transfer methods.
✣ I visited LA and Joshua Tree! Highly recommend the New Jalisco bar and the Noah Purifoy Outdoor Desert Art Museum of Assemblage Sculpture <3

february 2020, a delight:
✣ I’m looking for work again, do you have any leads? I’m interested in art installation, assisting artists, a job involving carpentry,  serving jobs, and babysitting.
✣ Check my instagram and website for some last minute valentines gifts for ✿your sweeties, your friends, your lovers ✿

XANDER MARRO

X is getting ready for the house. What does that mean? Unknown! But the domestic houses of cards in her life have been shuffling themselves and she’s been spending more time at WCH, airBnBing her apartment in her house...Know someone looking for a place to stay while traveling? - hit her up. The 1st floor apartment in her house is opening up in April & maybe its someone’s dream scenario to live alone, but not totally alone. Atwells near Academy. Two bedrooms except for that one of them is sort of a library with a secret room behind a bookshelf. Know someone or possibly interested yourself? ...send an e-mail to missxander@hotmail.com.  Roofs made of fingernails. Painting nails even though the days of endless wall painting are not over. Another thing going on is that she’s working on a reading series with Gretta & Trey & Daphne that’s designed for people to draw during. The first one is Feb 20th and will feature Darcie Dennigan and SJ Bagley and be at Gretta and Trey’s house...more info forthcoming...but mark your calendars!

Attempting to animate what's intended as a nature documentary-cum-speculative “weather” report. "Sometimes, as in soap operas, the attitude struck is of a longing for a world of sentimental plots and for poetic justice enacted against the forces of melodrama that keep rupturing the heterosexual bond, women's friendships, and the family.” You may come to recall a local news graphic that you were very absorbed by for some inarticulate reason.

JOSEPHINE DEVANBU

It’s self-help o-clock season decade and I’m starting with what I have in hand. I’ve activated my phone’s “reading-mode” setting for Chrome, which drains all color form my screen when I open the browser. Black-and-white-internet has a grating, nostalgic affect. When the sun sets, and f.lux turns up the sepia tones, the combo is enough to get me to stop surfing. Instagram, however, rolls with the punches. “Reading-mode” is no match for an app that’s kept me scrolling through many an arbitrary, sentimental filter.

I know it’s locked, but muscle memory still has me reaching for Instagram. When try to open it, another app,“StayFocused,” flashes a countdown of the hours, minutes, and seconds of remaining lock-down unlocks (549:29:43), as well and stats on how many times I’ve attempted in vain to open it (23). Below the countdown, is an unattributed mantra: “Stay Focused on your GOALS, your PEACE & your HAPPINESS. Don’t waste your TIME on anything that doesn’t contribute to your GROWTH [emphasis original]” Wish me luck.
